I think the reason we were all collectively disappointed about Beast’s transformation at the end of Beauty and the Beast is because he just looks like a guy. Human Mrs Pots looks like if Mrs Pots were a human. So do Cogsworth and Lumiere. But Prince Adam just looks like a guy with pecs and hair that’s a bit longer than the other Disney princes’ I guess.
I count myself as one of those people who was initially very disappointed by Beast’s transformation, but I can’t agree that he doesn’t look like the Beast. Glen Keane, the lead animator of both Beast and Adam, did a great job showing glimpses of Adam’s face underneath the Beast’s.
I went overboard finding examples of this because as I went, I found it more and more remarkable how Glen was able to make Adam look like the Beast without making Adam look at all beastly:
How did Glen do this?? I’m super impressed.
My alternative theory for why many people are disappointed in Adam’s appearance is:
A) The first shot we (and Belle) see of Adam is offputting, not attractive, but I think that’s on purpose to mirror the first shot that Belle sees of him as the Beast, and thus underscore their resemblance:
2) The animation of the ending was rushed, so there are snippets of Adam animation that look awful:
I will never stop laughing at the pic on the left!
This isn’t the fault of the character design, however, just some shoddy animation due to time constraints. Because the character, when animated well by Glen, like in the kiss, does look very handsome, even sexy.
D) The Beast’s character design is magnificent. Almost any prince who is held up against him, no matter how handsome, even his own self, is gonna seem pretty boring in comparison, IMO.
Adam’s appearance has grown on me over the years, and even though I still think Beast is sexier than his human self, I think Adam’s character design is excellent.
